There are many reasons why someone would not be ready for life coaching. Maybe you want to read some books first and give things a go on your own. Maybe it’s just bad timing — you have other areas in your life to get in order, like getting rid of debt, switching jobs or ending a relationship before you decide to invest in yourself.

If, however, someone has all of the following thought patterns, there’s a very low likelihood that they’ll seek out a coach, to begin with. If you’re open to change and want to become a better you, then watch out for these. And if any of these remind you of someone in your life, perhaps it’s time to rethink. You need to know whether they deserve a place in your heart and mind and whether setting boundaries makes sense.
Why you might not be Ready for Life Coaching?
Victimhood Thinking
You’re blaming circumstances and other people for where you are in life. “It’s my parents’ fault for how they raised me.” “It’s my ex’s fault for my financial situation.” Taking responsibility is a tough pill to swallow if you’re habit is blaming others. You have to point the finger at yourself and take control of your future before you can start moving toward big changes. Chances are you are not ready for life coaching.
Being Tough
A successful coaching engagement requires you to get uncomfortable and be vulnerable and to stop covering up the soft spots. Those things that keep repeating in your head. Or those that put a knot in your stomach or a heavy feeling in your chest. They aren’t going to go away on their own. You may have noticed that lashing out or beating yourself up aren’t very helpful actions to take.
Absolutist Thinking
Everything is easier when you categorize every person and every experience into good or bad. But the truth is that the world is a million shades of gray. We also know that absolutist thinking is downright bad for you. Most people who think very black and white are more anxious, more depressed, and more likely to have suicidal thoughts. Opening yourself to the possibility that things may not actually be how you see them from your perspective is the first step toward positive change.
Swearing by New Age Nonsense
Aside from the placebo effect, there is no such thing as a healing crystal any more than there are lizard men secretly running the world. Life coaching might take time to make things come on track. If a Kardashian is selling it, how much do you trust it’s effectiveness? The “Law of Attraction?” It definitely works — for people who bust their asses to get to the goal they envision. It’s not magic, it’s being productive with focus and hard work.
Okay, so the fourth one isn’t exactly a red flag. If something works for you, then do it. I just don’t like seeing people wasting time and energy (or a ton of money) on things that are “fluffier” and less effective than others.
