Life Coaching isn’t for everyone, and even for those who seek it out, sometimes the timing is wrong.

Here are the four reasons why you might not be ready for coaching.
There are many reasons why people wouldn’t be ready for life coaching. Maybe you want to read a few books or take some online courses. You want to see if you can’t give it a go on your own to to make the personal changes that you want to make. Perhaps the timing’s bad, and you’re going through something really difficult. Hence, you want to get on the other side of it, so that you can clean off your plate and focus and invest in yourself.

In this list, I want you to recognize whether any of these thought patterns are ones that you have. If so, they aren’t going to be helping you get to where you want to be. Furthermore if you see a few of these in the people around you, you may want to question whether they’re helpful people to be in your life.
Victimhood Thinking
Number one is Victimhood Thinking. {from South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (Paramount Pictures, 1999)} “Should we blame the government? Or blame society? Or should we blame the images on TV? Blame Canada, Blame Canada!” Victimhood Thinking means that you’re blaming other people and circumstances for the things that aren’t going well in your life. “It’s my parents fault for how they raised me, ” or “It’s my ex’s fault about my financial situation.” You have to learn to point that finger back at yourself in order to start taking responsibility and make those big life changes that you want.
You’re Being a Tough Guy
Number two is Acting Tough. {from Pulp Fiction (Miramax Films, 1994)} “What country are you from?” “What?” “‘What’ ain’t no country I’ve ever heard of – do they speak English in ‘What’?” Any successful coaching engagement is going to require you to get uncomfortable. It’s going to require you to be vulnerable. It’s time to stop covering up the soft spots. Those things that are going on in your head that are giving you that heavy feeling in your chest. Or perhaps your throat or that knot in your stomach. They’re not going to go away on their own. Additionally, lashing out or beating yourself up aren’t the right actions to take to get you to where you want to be.
Absolutist Thinking is not good for Life Coaching
Number three is Absolutist Thinking. {from Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (20th Century Fox, 2005)} “Only a Sith deals in absolutes.” It’s very easy to categorize everyone and everything in the world being good or bad or black or white. In reality, the world is a million different shades of grey. Opening yourself up to the possibility that the things you see from your perspective might not be the way things really are in the world. That’s the first step toward living the life you really want.
New Age Balderdash isn’t Science-based Life Coaching
Number four is believing in and swearing by New-Agey nonsense. {from Stephen King’s It (ABC Mini-Series, 1990)} “Do you know what a placebo is, Eddie?” If you think healing crystals are going to help you to get to where you want to be, then I’ve got news for you. If a Kardashian is selling it, it’s probably not a good idea, and I would really really question its effectiveness. In summary, those are the four reasons why you probably aren’t ready for life coaching.
Just Your Opinion, Man
Now, if you saw all of these and you’re thinking this: {from The Big Lebowski (Universal Pictures, 1998)}”Yeah well, you know that’s just like your opinion man.” If that’s what you’re thinking, then you’re probably not ready for coaching.
