The best leader is not an arrogant one but a humble one. At first glance, this might sound counterproductive because when we think of influential figures, humility is perhaps the last thing that comes to mind.

What is Humility?

Humility is the belief that one does not have all the answers and that there is a lot to learn from others. It’s about acknowledging not only your strengths and weaknesses but also those of others around you.

Why is Humility an Important Leadership Quality?

Humility is an important quality in general, but why is it important in leadership?

Gives more access to the team

Humble leaders are emotionally intelligent, and easy to talk to and relate to since they encourage and support other members of the team. A welcoming and supportive leader is more approachable and accessible, thereby promoting a culture of inclusivity and psychological safety. No one feels scared or incompetent enough to express their ideas, questions, or concerns, which makes for the smooth functioning of the entire team. Members feel like they are an important component of a well-oiled machine, thereby creating more harmony and eliminating friction.

Promotes creativity and innovation

Humble leaders are more open to hearing others’ ideas and creative solutions, which leads to more efficient work procedures, cost savings, and better morale. As a leader, it is important to give credit to other people for their contribution and also accept responsibility when you make a mistake. Humility allows authority figures to admit when they are wrong and appreciate team members when they are right. Appreciating employees when it is due only encourages them to perform better and resolves any hidden grievances.

Increases Influence

Humble leaders leave a stronger impact on their team members compared to arrogant leaders since they appreciate rather than fear others’ skills and abilities. Humility allows leaders to accept that other people can have better ideas than them without feeling threatened. This puts them in a good light and consequently improves their image in the hearts of their team members.

Helps Improve Overall Business

When leaders and their team members work together in a supportive environment free of politics, complaints, and lack of communication, the end result is always positive. A smooth-functioning team comes with more creative ideas and suffers from less disruption. Members actually enjoy what they do, and there is a lesser probability of work-related burnout. All this positively impacts the company’s productivity and overall success.

How to Cultivate Humility in Leadership

Humility is not always an innate characteristic among leaders. Sometimes it is learned and developed over time. Here are some of the ways leaders can incorporate humility into their daily work practices:

Asking for help and Admitting Mistakes

Humble leaders believe they are never too good to ask for help. They admit when they’ve hit a dead-end and show acceptance of others’ ideas. Similarly, they do not give employees heat for requiring assistance as they realize that it’s an integral part of learning. They also admit when they have made a mistake and take responsibility for it rather than trying to play the blame game. Additionally, they do not shame their team members for making a mistake but rather help them learn from it and do better in the future.

Appreciating Ideas and Insights

Humble leaders are keen listeners who encourage feedback rather than shunning it. They realize that there is a lot to learn from others and know that they themselves don’t know everything. They practice active listening without judgment, show genuine interest, and give feedback if necessary.

three elements of effective listening

Caring for Others

A humble leader always invests in other people who they believe have potential. If they see a member struggling, they provide them with the appropriate tools, training, and guidance. Humble leaders are not threatened by other people’s success; they have no trouble seeing them blossom into better versions of themselves. This quality makes them more respected and appreciated.

Bottom Line on Humility

Humility is one of the most important qualities that make a leader successful. It not only makes them more liked and respected but also improves the company’s overall success. With the right attitude and practices, it can be incorporated into daily work life.
